1,400 Kilometres for a Second Chance: Amit Agarwal’s Journey from Jabalpur to a New Life

Patient Story | Liver Transplant | Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh to Ludhiana, Punjab

Sometimes, the road to a new life is not measured in kilometres.

It is measured in courage, faith, and the determination of a family that refuses to give up.

For Amit Agarwal from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, that road stretched nearly 1,400 kilometres—from Jabalpur to Ludhiana, Punjab.

And when the call finally came, there was no time to waste.

When Liver Cirrhosis Began Taking Over His Life

Amit had been living with liver cirrhosis for around a year. He consulted several doctors in Jabalpur, hoping that his liver problems could be controlled.

But despite seeking treatment at different centres, including in cities such as Bhopal and Nagpur, his condition continued to deteriorate.

The complications of liver cirrhosis were becoming increasingly difficult to manage.

Day by day, the disease was taking away more of his normal life.

Work became difficult. His health deteriorated. His family watched helplessly as the person they depended on became increasingly unwell.

Then someone told the family about Dr. Gursagar Singh Sahota, a liver transplant specialist in Punjab, and his work at DMC&H, Ludhiana.

Amit, along with his wife Neha and son Tanay, travelled to Ludhiana to seek another opinion.

After evaluating him, Dr. Sahota and his team advised that liver transplantation was the definitive treatment.

There was, however, another problem.

Amit did not have a suitable living liver donor in his family.

The family would have to wait for a deceased-donor (cadaveric) liver transplant.

Then Came the Call

They returned to Jabalpur and continued waiting.

Weeks passed.

Then, one day, the phone rang.

It was Dr. Sahota and his team.

“A liver donor is available. You need to come as soon as possible.”

For most people, a 1,400-kilometre journey between Madhya Pradesh and Punjab would be a logistical challenge.

For Amit, it was a race against time.

The family knew that an available deceased-donor liver cannot simply be kept waiting indefinitely. The transplant team, hospital and donor allocation process all operate within a very narrow window.

There was no time for elaborate planning.

Amit and his 19-year-old son, Tanay, quickly packed their belongings.

And they started driving.

A Journey Through the Night

The car left Jabalpur and began its long journey north.

Through the night.

Across state borders.

Towards Punjab.

Towards Ludhiana.

Towards the possibility of a new life.

And in a remarkable testament to his determination, Amit himself drove the car for a considerable part of the journey—despite being seriously unwell with advanced liver disease.

His body was struggling.

But his mind had made its decision.

He was going to reach Ludhiana.

His son, Tanay, travelled beside him.

Just 19 years old.

Yet the responsibility he carried that night was far beyond his years.

The 19-Year-Old Son Who Refused to Panic

For Tanay, this was not simply a journey to another city.

It was his father's life.

As the family travelled towards Ludhiana, Tanay knew that there was no room for fear.

Once they reached the hospital, he would have to help make some of the most important decisions of his young life.

He stood firmly beside his father.

He gave the necessary consent for his father's treatment and transplant.

And throughout those difficult hours, he kept reassuring his family:

“Everything will be fine.”

Sometimes, courage does not look dramatic.

Sometimes, it is simply a 19-year-old son standing beside his father when the family needs him most.

They Reached Just in Time

After travelling nearly 1,400 kilometres, Amit and Tanay finally reached DMC&H, Ludhiana.

The donor liver was almost ready.

There was no time to rest.

No time to recover from the journey.

No time to think about how far they had travelled.

Amit was rapidly prepared for surgery.

The transplant team moved into action.

And the journey from Jabalpur to Ludhiana became the beginning of another, even more important journey—the journey towards recovery.

A Successful Cadaveric Liver Transplant

In November 2025, Amit underwent a deceased-donor liver transplant at DMC&H, Ludhiana, under the care of Dr. Gursagar Singh Sahota and his multidisciplinary transplant team.

The transplant was successful.

His recovery progressed well, and after spending 16 days in the ICU, Amit was able to leave intensive care.

For a family that had spent months watching his liver disease worsen, this was an extraordinary turning point.

Neha, his wife, was overwhelmed with emotion.

The woman who had stood by her husband through the uncertainty of liver cirrhosis, multiple consultations, travel and the transplant journey could finally see him recovering.

The family was together again.

And this time, they could begin looking forward.

From Fighting for Survival to Living Normally Again

Amit eventually returned to Jabalpur with his family.

Life slowly began changing.

The man who had once struggled to function normally was now recovering.

Today, in August 2026, almost nine months after his liver transplant, Amit has returned to his business and is living a remarkably normal life.

His liver function tests are normal, and he is once again able to work and participate in everyday family life.

The difference is profound.

Before transplantation, liver cirrhosis had begun dictating his life.

Today, Amit is once again making his own decisions about his life.

The Family Returned to Punjab—This Time With Gratitude

In August 2026, Amit, Neha and Tanay returned to Punjab.

But this journey was different.

There was no race against time.

No frantic phone call.

No fear of missing a donor organ.

This time, they came with gratitude.

Amit brought a small but deeply meaningful gift for Dr. Gursagar Singh Sahota—a token of love and appreciation for the doctor and the entire transplant team who had helped give him another chance at life.

For a doctor, such moments are difficult to describe in words.

Because the greatest reward of a liver transplant is not simply a successful operation.

It is seeing a patient return to normal life.

Back to work.

Back to family.

Back to dreams.

Amit Now Wants Others to Know: Liver Transplant Can Change a Life

Amit's experience has changed his perspective on liver disease.

Today, he actively encourages people suffering from liver cirrhosis and advanced liver disease in Jabalpur and Madhya Pradesh to seek timely evaluation at a specialised liver transplant centre rather than waiting until complications become life-threatening.

He is also spreading awareness about organ donation and deceased-donor liver transplantation.

His own story has given him a powerful message to share:

When liver cirrhosis reaches an advanced stage, liver transplantation can offer a second chance at life.

And sometimes, that second chance may require the courage to travel hundreds of kilometres to reach the right transplant team.

A Story of a Father, a Son and a Family That Never Gave Up

Amit's story is not only about liver transplantation.

It is about a family.

A wife who stood beside her husband.

A 19-year-old son who suddenly had to become strong beyond his years.

A father who, despite severe illness, got behind the wheel and drove towards his chance at survival.

A transplant team that answered the call when a suitable organ became available.

And a journey of nearly 1,400 kilometres from Jabalpur to Ludhiana, undertaken because every minute mattered.

Today, Amit is back in Jabalpur.

He is back at work.

He is spending time with his family.

His liver function is normal.

And the same man who once struggled because of complications of cirrhosis is now telling others that they should not lose hope.

A Message for Patients in Jabalpur and Madhya Pradesh

If you or someone in your family is suffering from liver cirrhosis, liver failure, recurrent complications of cirrhosis, or advanced liver disease, do not wait until the situation becomes an emergency.

A timely evaluation by an experienced liver transplant team can help determine whether transplantation should be considered.

For patients from Jabalpur, Bhopal, Nagpur and across Madhya Pradesh, specialised liver transplant care is available beyond the boundaries of their home city.

Amit travelled nearly 1,400 kilometres.

Not because the journey was easy.

But because his life was worth the journey.

And today, that journey has brought him back to the life he thought he was losing.

From Jabalpur to Ludhiana. From cirrhosis to a new liver. From uncertainty to hope.

This is Amit Agarwal's story.

And perhaps, for another family living with advanced liver disease, it can be a reminder that the right treatment at the right time can change everything.
