Hepatobiliary surgery refers to operations on the liver, bile ducts, gallbladder, and pancreas. This is a highly specialised field requiring extensive training. Dr. Sahota is one of the few surgeons in India with full training in both hepatobiliary surgery and liver transplantation.
Conditions Treated
- Liver tumours (benign and malignant)
- Gallbladder cancer
- Bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma)
- Gallstones and bile duct stones
- Bile duct strictures
- Liver cysts and abscesses
- Pancreatic tumours
- Secondary liver tumours (metastases from colorectal or other cancers)
Liver Resection
Liver resection is the surgical removal of part of the liver. Because the liver regenerates, it is possible to safely remove up to 70% of the liver in patients with good liver function.
Resection is the preferred treatment for liver cancer in patients without cirrhosis, and for selected benign tumours.
Bile Duct Surgery
Bile duct surgery addresses blockages, leaks, tumours, and strictures. Complex reconstructive procedures (hepaticojejunostomy) may be required for bile duct injuries, stones, or tumours.
Dr. Sahota has extensive experience in bile duct reconstruction, including revision of failed prior repairs.
What to Expect
Major hepatobiliary surgery requires:
- 5-10 days in hospital
- 4-6 weeks for full recovery at home
- Dietary adjustments in the first few weeks
- Close follow-up with imaging and blood tests
Minimally invasive (laparoscopic and robotic) approaches are used when feasible.
