Many people with liver conditions are managed by general physicians for months or years before seeing a liver specialist. Knowing when to escalate can prevent serious complications.
See a Specialist If You Have
- Abnormal liver function tests that do not normalise after 3-6 months
- Fatty liver on ultrasound with elevated enzymes
- Diagnosed hepatitis B or C
- Liver cirrhosis (any cause)
- A liver lesion or mass found on imaging
- Jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes)
- Ascites (fluid in the abdomen)
- A family history of liver disease or liver cancer
Red Flags -- See a Specialist Urgently
Go to an emergency facility or call a liver specialist immediately if you have:
- Sudden severe abdominal pain
- Vomiting blood or passing black stools (may indicate bleeding from varices)
- Fever with jaundice (may indicate cholangitis)
- Confusion or altered consciousness in someone with liver disease
- Rapidly worsening jaundice
