How the LiverGuru Liver Transplant Program Began in Punjab: A Journey Towards World-Class Liver Care Close to Home
By Dr. Gursagar Singh Sahota (LiverGuru) Chief Liver Transplant Surgeon
Bringing Advanced Liver Transplant Care to Punjab
For many years, a diagnosis of end-stage liver disease requiring a liver transplant often meant one difficult decision for families in Punjab—travelling outside the state.
Patients routinely journeyed to Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and other metropolitan cities in search of advanced liver transplant treatment. Along with the emotional burden of a life-threatening illness, families faced enormous financial challenges, long periods away from home, accommodation expenses, and uncertainty during one of the most difficult phases of their lives.
Recognizing this unmet need, Dr. Gursagar Singh Sahota, popularly known as LiverGuru, envisioned a future where patients could receive world-class liver transplant surgery in Punjab without compromising on quality or outcomes.
That vision became a reality in 2024 with the establishment of the LiverGuru Liver Transplant Program at Dayanand Medical College & Hospital (DMC&H), Ludhiana.
Today, the program represents much more than a surgical service—it is a commitment to bringing comprehensive liver care, organ donation awareness, and hope to thousands of patients across Punjab and North India.
The Beginning of the LiverGuru Liver Transplant Program
The Liver Transplant Department at DMC&H, Ludhiana, was officially inaugurated in October 2024 under the leadership of Dr. Gursagar Singh Sahota.
However, launching a liver transplant program involves far more than opening a new department.
It requires years of planning, advanced infrastructure, internationally accepted clinical protocols, highly trained surgeons, transplant anaesthesiologists, hepatologists, critical care specialists, radiologists, pathologists, transplant coordinators, nursing teams, blood bank support, infection control specialists, and dedicated operation theatres.
Every process—from donor evaluation to recipient surgery and long-term follow-up—had to be carefully developed to meet international standards of patient safety and clinical excellence.
The objective was clear:
To build a sustainable, world-class liver transplant ecosystem in Punjab that patients could trust for generations.
A Historic Milestone: The First Liver Transplant
In November 2024, the LiverGuru team successfully performed its first Living Donor Liver Transplant (LDLT).
This was a defining moment—not only for the institution but also for liver transplant care in Punjab.
The successful surgery demonstrated that highly complex liver transplant procedures could be safely performed by an experienced multidisciplinary team within the state.
More importantly, it gave new hope to patients who previously believed they had no option but to travel hundreds of kilometres for treatment.
Establishing Cadaveric Liver Transplant Services
Soon after the first living donor transplant, the team successfully completed its first Cadaveric (Deceased Donor) Liver Transplant.
Cadaveric liver transplantation is among the most challenging areas of modern medicine.
Every transplant requires rapid coordination between donor hospitals, organ retrieval teams, transplant coordinators, laboratory services, intensive care specialists, operation theatre staff, and recipient teams—all working within a narrow time window to ensure the best possible outcome.
Successfully establishing this service marked another major milestone in the advancement of transplant medicine in Punjab.
The Biggest Challenge Was Building Trust
Creating the technical infrastructure was only part of the journey.
The greater challenge was changing a deeply rooted perception.
For decades, families across Punjab believed that successful liver transplantation was only possible in hospitals outside the state.
Many patients automatically travelled to Delhi or other cities, often at tremendous emotional and financial cost.
Building confidence required more than successful surgeries.
It required honest conversations, patient education, transparent counselling, and consistently delivering excellent clinical outcomes.
Every successful transplant strengthened public confidence and demonstrated that patients could receive advanced liver transplant care close to home.
Building a Complete Liver Transplant Ecosystem
A liver transplant cannot succeed because of one surgeon alone.
It succeeds because of an entire team working together around the clock.
The LiverGuru Liver Transplant Program was built around a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach involving:
- Liver transplant surgeons
- Hepatologists
- Liver transplant anaesthesiologists
- Critical care specialists
- Gastroenterologists
- Radiologists
- Pathologists
- Transplant coordinators
- Operation theatre teams
- ICU nurses
- Physiotherapists
- Clinical dietitians
- Blood bank specialists
- Laboratory experts
- Infection prevention and infection control teams
Every successful transplant reflects the dedication, coordination, and expertise of dozens of healthcare professionals working together with one common goal—saving lives.
More Than Liver Transplant Surgery
The vision of the LiverGuru program extends far beyond performing successful operations.
Its mission includes:
- Early diagnosis of liver diseases
- Prevention of liver failure
- Public education on liver health
- Organ donation awareness
- Education regarding living donor liver transplantation
- Long-term care of liver transplant recipients
- Expanding access to advanced liver care across Punjab
Through educational seminars, public awareness campaigns, digital health initiatives, and patient counselling, the program continues to promote early diagnosis and timely treatment of liver diseases.
Organ Donation: The Gift That Saves Lives
Every successful cadaveric liver transplant begins with one extraordinary act of generosity.
A grieving family chooses to donate the organs of a loved one so that others may continue to live.
This selfless decision gives hope to patients waiting for life-saving transplantation.
Increasing awareness about deceased organ donation remains one of the most important missions of the LiverGuru team.
Greater awareness can reduce waiting times, save more lives, and help build a stronger culture of organ donation across Punjab.
Why Receiving Liver Transplant Care in Punjab Matters
Patients today have access to advanced liver transplant services without leaving their home state.
Receiving treatment closer to home offers several important advantages:
- Easier access to specialist consultations
- Reduced travel expenses
- Lower accommodation costs
- Better emotional support from family
- Convenient long-term follow-up after transplantation
- Improved continuity of care
Since liver transplant recipients require lifelong monitoring, having a dedicated transplant team within Punjab provides reassurance and convenience for both patients and families.
Looking Towards the Future
The establishment of the LiverGuru Liver Transplant Program in 2024 was only the beginning.
The long-term vision continues to focus on:
- Expanding access to liver transplant services across Punjab
- Strengthening organ donation awareness
- Advancing living donor and deceased donor liver transplantation
- Training the next generation of transplant professionals
- Delivering world-class outcomes through ethical, evidence-based medicine
Every successful liver transplant represents far more than a complex surgical procedure.
It represents renewed hope, a second chance at life, and another step towards making Punjab a recognised centre of excellence in liver transplantation.
At LiverGuru, our mission remains unchanged—to ensure that every patient with liver disease has access to expert care, compassionate support, and the opportunity to live a healthier future without having to leave Punjab.
