For many years, a diagnosis of end-stage liver disease requiring a liver transplant often meant one difficult decision for families in Punjab—travelling outside the state.

Patients routinely journeyed to Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and other metropolitan cities in search of advanced liver transplant treatment. Along with the emotional burden of a life-threatening illness, families faced enormous financial challenges, long periods away from home, accommodation expenses, and uncertainty during one of the most difficult phases of their lives.

Recognizing this unmet need, Dr. Gursagar Singh Sahota, popularly known as LiverGuru, envisioned a future where patients could receive world-class liver transplant surgery in Punjab without compromising on quality or outcomes.

That vision became a reality in 2024 with the establishment of the LiverGuru Liver Transplant Program at Dayanand Medical College & Hospital (DMC&H), Ludhiana.

Today, the program represents much more than a surgical service—it is a commitment to bringing comprehensive liver care, organ donation awareness, and hope to thousands of patients across Punjab and North India.

The Beginning of the LiverGuru Liver Transplant Program

The Liver Transplant Department at DMC&H, Ludhiana, was officially inaugurated in October 2024 under the leadership of Dr. Gursagar Singh Sahota.

However, launching a liver transplant program involves far more than opening a new department.

It requires years of planning, advanced infrastructure, internationally accepted clinical protocols, highly trained surgeons, transplant anaesthesiologists, hepatologists, critical care specialists, radiologists, pathologists, transplant coordinators, nursing teams, blood bank support, infection control specialists, and dedicated operation theatres.

Every process—from donor evaluation to recipient surgery and long-term follow-up—had to be carefully developed to meet international standards of patient safety and clinical excellence.

A Historic Milestone: The First Liver Transplant

In November 2024, the LiverGuru team successfully performed its first Living Donor Liver Transplant (LDLT).

The successful surgery demonstrated that highly complex liver transplant procedures could be safely performed by an experienced multidisciplinary team within the state.

More importantly, it gave new hope to patients who previously believed they had no option but to travel hundreds of kilometres for treatment.

Establishing Cadaveric Liver Transplant Services

Soon after the first living donor transplant, the team successfully completed its first Cadaveric (Deceased Donor) Liver Transplant.

Cadaveric liver transplantation is among the most challenging areas of modern medicine.

Every transplant requires rapid coordination between donor hospitals, organ retrieval teams, transplant coordinators, laboratory services, intensive care specialists, operation theatre staff, and recipient teams—all working within a narrow time window to ensure the best possible outcome.

Successfully establishing this service marked another major milestone in the advancement of transplant medicine in Punjab.

The Biggest Challenge Was Building Trust

Creating the technical infrastructure was only part of the journey.

The greater challenge was changing a deeply rooted perception.

For decades, families across Punjab believed that successful liver transplantation was only possible in hospitals outside the state.

Many patients automatically travelled to Delhi or other cities, often at tremendous emotional and financial cost.
