Can Hepatic Encephalopathy Be Reversed?
In many cases, an episode can improve significantly when the underlying trigger is identified and treated.
Treatment depends on the patient's individual situation and may include:
- Identifying and treating infections
- Managing gastrointestinal bleeding
- Correcting dehydration
- Correcting electrolyte abnormalities
- Treating constipation
- Reviewing medications
- Using medicines that reduce the absorption or production of ammonia in the gut
Lactulose
Lactulose is commonly used in the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy.
It helps reduce the absorption of ammonia from the intestine and promotes its elimination through bowel movements.
Rifaximin
Rifaximin may also be used in appropriate patients, particularly to help reduce recurrent episodes of hepatic encephalopathy.
These medicines should be used under medical supervision, with treatment tailored to the individual patient.
Can Liver Disease Affect Sleep?
Yes.
People with advanced liver disease can develop disturbances in their normal sleep–wake cycle.
A person may:
- Sleep during the day
- Stay awake at night
- Have difficulty sleeping
- Experience excessive daytime sleepiness
Sleep disturbance can occur alongside early hepatic encephalopathy.
However, sleep problems have many possible causes, so they need to be assessed in the context of the patient's overall health.
Can Liver Disease Change Personality?
It can.
Hepatic encephalopathy and advanced liver disease may be associated with:
- Irritability
- Reduced interest in usual activities
- Personality changes
- Unusual behavior
- Difficulty communicating
- Reduced awareness of surroundings
Sometimes the patient does not realize that anything has changed.
A family member may be the first person to say:
“He is not behaving like himself.”
That observation can provide an important clue to the medical team.
Can Hepatic Encephalopathy Be Prevented?
Not every episode can be prevented, but the risk can often be reduced.
Patients with a history of hepatic encephalopathy should:
- Take prescribed medicines regularly
- Avoid constipation
- Follow their liver treatment plan
- Avoid unnecessary sedatives or medicines that can worsen mental function
- Seek medical attention if an infection is suspected
- Attend regular follow-up appointments
- Follow the advice of their liver specialist

When Is Confusion in a Liver Patient an Emergency?
New or worsening confusion in someone with advanced liver disease deserves medical attention, particularly if it is accompanied by:
- Increasing sleepiness
- Difficulty staying awake
- Significant disorientation
- Vomiting blood or gastrointestinal bleeding
- Fever or suspected infection
- Severe weakness
- Reduced responsiveness
- Loss of consciousness

Can Hepatic Encephalopathy Mean the Liver Disease Is Advanced?
